What Is The HISA Grant for Veterans?

We live in an area that is extremely proud of our military, and we aim to help our local veterans as much as possible. The Emerald Coast is home to Eglin Air Force Base, Hurlburt Field,  Tyndall Air Force Base, Duke Field, and the Pensacola Naval Air Station (home of the Blue Angels). The most important way that Kitchen & Bath Center is able to show support is by modifying homes of disabled veterans who have received their HISA grant from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

What is the HISA grant?

The HISA (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations) grant provides improvements and structural alterations that are deemed medically necessary for disabled veterans.

These improvements include

  • Allowing for an easier entrance and exit from the home
  • Ability to use bathroom facilities
  • Making sinks and countertops accessible
  • Improving plumbing and/or electrical systems in the home for installation of home medical equipment.

HISA will not  pay for:

  • Walkways to exterior buildings
  • Widening of driveways
  • Hot tubs or Jacuzzi tubs
  • Exterior decking

The lifetime HISA benefit for Veterans and Servicemembers who have a service-connected condition is provided up to $6,800. If you are a disabled veteran who has a non-service-connected condition, don't fret! The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs allows for a lifetime benefit of up to $2,000 for Veterans whose disabilities are not service-related.

To see if you qualify for a grant, see the U.S. Departments of Veterans Affairs  website. There, you will also find a complete map of the HISA process, which can be downloaded here.
