How to Make a Small Kitchen Look Larger

by Kitchen and Bath Center / June 26, 2018

When it comes to increasing the size of your kitchen, it is not always financially or structurally possible to remove walls, add electrical or increase square footage. Below we will explore three options to give your kitchen the feel of being larger without any significant construction.

clean cabinet lines
Clean Cabinet Lines

Selecting cabinetry with clean lines such as Shaker or Slab door and drawer fronts help makes any room appear larger because of the straight lines of the cabinet. Visually there is no pattern, such as a raised panel or glaze point, to distract your eye. Also, Shaker & Slab cabinetry is terrific in adding height to your kitchen, especially if you are looking at installing 36” or 42” wall uppers.

light colors
Soft / Light Colors

Apply soft colors with your countertops and backsplash to accent the crisp, clean lines of your cabinetry. You will find that quartz countertops, over granite, will offer you a variety of light to earthy finishes to select from without too much strong movement. A backsplash is also an excellent option for adding brightness, with a fun twist, of color that comes in a variety of textures such as natural stone, glass, metals, and marble.

large tiles
Larger Tiles

It used to be commonplace to see 8x8 or 10x10 flooring everywhere you went, but these days we encourage our homeowners to go with larger tiles, starting at 12x24. The use of larger tile not only elongates the visual representation of your room, but also eliminates the number of grout lines in your kitchen. The less tile you have in your space the more open it will feel and BONUS…less dirt lines you have to clean!

In the end, these are just a few tips on how to make your small kitchen look bigger. It is indeed about keeping it simple and clean to help make your space not only functional for your family but mostly the best use of space for what you have!
